Revised closure of Cutcombe Hill

Please plan ahead to avoid the  the upcoming preparation and road resurfacing work on Cutcombe Hill, Wheddon X. The work includes road edge and bank repairs, replacement of the surface, cover adjustments, and white lining. This work is scheduled to take place from 15th May to 2nd June. During this period, the road will be closed between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM each day, excluding weekends, the bank holiday, and 28th May for Cutcombe Market sale.

Please note that the original online notice shows the early start date for works and does not take into consideration the Cutcombe Market dates from 14th to 28th May. To accommodate this, the scheme has been delayed until 15th May, with a down day on 28th May. Consequently, the work will now run until 2nd June.

Somerset Highways understand that road closures can be inconvenient, and we have carefully considered various options to minimise disruption. Evening and night work was considered; however, due to the significant drop from the road edge down the valley, it was deemed unsafe to conduct work during these hours. Safety is our top priority, and we believe that working during daylight hours will ensure the well-being of our workers.

During the closure, an official diversion will be in place, which, under legal requirements, must be of a similar classification of road or better, i.e., another A-class road. However, due to the limited A-class network, a diversion route has been designed using the A, B, and C class network: A39 Timberscombe, Dunster, Washford, Washford Cross Roundabout, B3190 Sticklepath, B3224 Beulah Chapel, Heath Poult Cross, C200 to Machine Cross re-joining A396 at the T junction.

*** Please note that you do not need to follow this official diversion; you can go to Minehead via Heathpoult to Timberscombe or over Dunkery to A39! Route to Taunton is not affected. Please take care, This diversion is for cars and motorbikes only.
